The Graduate School, in collaboration with the Center for Learning and Teaching has joined the Center for the Integration of Teaching, Research, and Learning (). This membership will support graduate students’ professional development in teaching. To better improve the evidence based practices of our offerings, the Badge of Completion in College Teaching will conform to the following (beginning in the fall semester of the 2025-2026 academic year):
- Active Workshops: at least 20 hours
- Asynchronous learning: Up to 14 hours (students can choose to do all 34 hours of learning in active workshops, or add supplemental asynchronous learning)
- Where to learn:
- The Center for Learning and Teaching and the Graduate School offer workshops that align to these goals and to the CIRTL values. Attendees at these workshops must sign in to receive credit for their participation.
- Students who have taken a discipline-based pedagogy or teaching class worth 3 credits may be exempt from 50% of these requirements. Those taking a course worth a different number of credits should contact the Graduate School regarding exemptions.
- Beyond ÑÇÖÞÇéÉ«: Pursuing professional development beyond the local offerings may be counted toward this badge and CIRTL recognition. Students interested in having external activities counted should contact the Graduate School before participation to ensure that the activities will count and can be verified.
Required learning content:
Planning, Implementing, Assessing
This badge focuses on three phases of teaching: planning to teach, implementing the plan, and assessment of students and self-assessment of the instructor. Approximately 20% of learning should relate to the planning phase, 60% to the implementing (practice) phase, and 20% to the assessment phase.
Required Evaluation and Engagement:
- Lesson plan review and assessments throughout the course of program (3 assessments to show growth and learning)
- Preliminary observation and feedback conversation (peer or expert).
- Follow up observation and feedback conversation (expert).
- Peer feedback: after completing 50% or more of the required learning activities (i.e., workshops and/or asynchronous learning) students will observe a peer (live or recorded). They will craft response feedback and meet with the person they observed to share their feedback and learning.
In achieving the badge, participants will be recognized at the CIRTL Practitioner level. Those who wish to proceed to deeper skill building and knowledge sharing can become recognized at the CIRTL Scholar Level.
Students who have begun the steps to complete the previously outlined badge, should reach out to Dr. Erica Sausner (esausner@binghamton.edu)in the Graduate School to discuss next steps for completing their badge as originally planned.
