Artist Biography

Recipient of the 2022 Avery Fisher Career Grant, American pianist Mackenzie Melemed is known for performances that combine refined pianism, thoughtful curation, and a natural gift for bringing audiences closer to the music. Equally at home in standard repertoire, lesser-known works, and new music, he has built a distinctive artistic profile around programs that balance beloved masterworks with unexpected discoveries, often framed by spoken introductions that invite deeper listening.

Praised for playing of “color, intention, and expressive power,” Melemed has appeared as soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Helsinki Philharmonic, Edmonton Symphony, Polish Radio Orchestra, and KBS Symphony, and has performed at major venues and festivals across North America, Europe, and Asia. A laureate of the American Pianists Awards and the China International Music Competition, he was the only pianist to receive a 2022 Avery Fisher Career Grant.

Melemed’s artist-led projects reflect his interest in repertoire that connects past and present. Keys Across America, his large-scale all-American recital project celebrating the United States’ 250th anniversary, explores nearly two centuries of American piano music across more than 50 cities and includes new works written for him by Laura Kaminsky and Avner Dorman. His debut album, Tulevaisuus — Finnish for “future” — pairs Bach, Brahms, and Liszt with new works by Sir Stephen Hough, Kaminsky, and Dorman, each inspired by those earlier composers.

Since 2020, Melemed has been based in Finland, where he has developed a significant performance career following his success at the 2017 Maj Lind International Piano Competition. His fluency in Finnish, begun through language study at Columbia University, has helped shape a close relationship with the country’s musical life, leading to invitations from nearly all of Finland’s orchestras and many of its leading festivals.

A Steinway Artist, Melemed earned his BM, MM, and Artist Diploma from The Juilliard School, where he studied with Robert McDonald and Emanuel Ax. Born in Massachusetts, he began piano studies at age four and gained unusually extensive stage experience early in life, giving more than 500 performances by age 13 and appearing at The White House Holiday Open House celebrations from 2004 to 2008.

Faculty artists Hippocrates Cheng and James Budinich present a new collaboration, combining an acoustic multi-instrumental performance with live electronic processing. Cheng’s live performance will be looped, chopped, and transformed through a new software environment created by Budinich, as they together forge a new acoustic-digital dialogue. Free Admission

Love, Loss, and Prayer: A Woman’s Life in Song centers on "Frauenliebe und Leben" by Robert Schumann, the beloved cycle tracing a woman’s journey through love, marriage, motherhood, and loss.
The program also celebrates the 150th anniversary of Manuel de Falla with songs reflecting memory, grief, and a mother’s prayer for children spared from war. Completing the recital is a revival of rarely heard songs in French by Mexican composer Gustavo Campa, newly edited and presented as a U.S. premiere, all brought to life by ������ɫ faculty artists Brenda Iglesias, contralto, and Curt Pajer, piano.

John Dowland (1563-1626), one of the greatest English composers of the late Renaissance, was a master of the lute and a composer of excellent songs with lute accompaniment. This program will feature a variety of both genres, illustrating his phenomenal skill and stylistic range. Free Admission.

HYPERCUBE has built a reputation on high-energy performances with impressive execution. The NYC-based quartet embraces the boundaries of chamber music, featuring cutting-edge works for saxophone, guitar, piano and percussion, while spanning electric and acoustic worlds.

HYPERCUBE has appeared as guest artist at , the (Pittsburgh), (Newfoundland), , the (Knoxville), (NYC), (Montréal) and the (Mexico City).

From championing original works such as ’s Hout, and ’s Localized Corrosion, to commissioning new works by composers , , , , , , , , and .

HYPERCUBE has collaborated with partner organizations such as Experiments in Opera, Luna Lab, Iranian Female Composers Association (IFCA), to bring new music to new audiences and participates in educational residencies such as Berklee Conservatory, Columbia, University of Virginia, Eastman School of Music, NYU, Brandeis, Cincinnati Conservatory, Boston Conservatory, Duke University, Oberlin Conservatory, Acadia (Nova Scotia), Wesleyan, and CalArts.

Since 2020, HYPERCUBE has hosted an annual composition lab. workshops engage dozens of emerging composers in the creation of adventurous new works for mixed quartet alongside educational and professional development sessions.

University Composers premiere pocket sized operas, transforming stories written by local students into new works for the stage, performed by Tri-Cities Opera's resident artists.

Transforming student stories into masterful mini-operas!

The Pocket Opera Project is telling stories with a distinct new voice! Local elementary and middle school students have been selected to have their story submissions transformed into mini-operas — in collaboration with ������ɫ composers.

These incredible “pocket operas” come with big theatrical moments and tell deeply human stories filled with adventure, tragedy, and magic!

K-12 students who would like a chance to see their story transformed into a “pocket opera” in 2027 are encouraged to enter the  by May 1, 2026.
