Summit schedule

  • 8:15–9 a.m. — Check-in and coffee with light refreshments
    Get settled in, enjoy a cup of coffee and a light snack and mingle with other attendees.
  • 9–9:45 a.m. — Preparing students for accommodations in higher education
    FULL GROUP SESSION
    An overview of ways that support staff and families can prepare students for the accommodation process in higher education.  Presenters will emphasize the essential elements of self-advocacy, self-awareness and proactive needs and understanding of differences between high school and college.
  • 10–10:45 a.m. — Break out sessions
    • Accommodations to on–campus living
      • Learn about what accommodations are offered and what requirements are necessary to request those accommodations.
    • Legal 101
      • Navigate the legalities around students with disabilities, including the differences between IDEA and ADA as well as success and access.
    • Developing non-academic skills 
      • Examine the skills that make the transition to higher education easier, including things like self-advocacy, time management , and self-determination.
  • 11:00–noon — ACCES VR and Partnerships for Inclusive Internships (PII)
    FULL GROUP SESSION
    Understand what supports ACCES VR can provide to students and how to establish a connection early in the process. Discuss Partnerships for Inclusive Internships (PII) and New York State's commitment to opportunities for students with disabilities.

  • 1–1:15 p.m. – Remarks from Vice President of Student Affairs, Brian Rose
     
  • 1:30–2:15 – Break out sessions
    • Requesting accommodations in higher education
      • Understand the interactive process of obtaining accommodations in college and the importance of communication between students and faculty
    • Disability documentation: What's helpful and useful?
      • Learn what documentation and evaluations are most helpful for students to share with disability offices to help establish accommodations.
    • Community college: building independence, confidence, and opportunity 
      • Transitioning from high school to college is about more than accommodations. Discover how community colleges support students with disabilities as they develop self-advocacy, navigate college expectations, explore career pathways, and prepare for transfer or employment.
  • 2:30–3:30 — Finding the right college fit 
    FULL GROUP SESSION
    Join this interactive panel to further explore how to help your students determine the best fit for them. Not all colleges and universities are the same. Some are further from home while some are close to hospitals and providers. Others have buses and trauma centers, therapists, on-campus living, and other campus supports. Join us for an honest conversation about how to prioritize your students needs to determine a good fit. 
  • 3:30–3:45 — Wrap-up, Raffles and Giveaways
    Closing remarks and free SWAG!
